Marta and João, two days in Napa

Back to the blog

A chateau wedding with a long table merging two families into one.

A groom carrying his laughing bride through a dry meadow, hills behind them

Three years of engagement, two days at the chateau, and sun over the whole open valley. Marta and João, I’ll tell you — it was worth the wait.

A bride dipped backwards laughing on the dance floor while a small girl watches, in black and white
Joy, all day

They got ready in separate villas and asked me for a first look. There is a small pond off one side of the chateau, and I left João standing in front of it with his back turned.

The moment he turned around and saw her, every nerve either of them had went quiet. Some of my favorite frames of the whole weekend came out of that five minutes.

The ceremony ran on laughter. These two are well loved by their people, and by the time we walked out I knew exactly what kind of evening we were in for.

The long table

I love a family-style table. The wine and the conversation went the length of it, two families closing into one, and the spoons kept ringing against the glasses until João kissed his bride again. Thank you both.
