Into the Woods with the Calloways

A path through the trees, hide-and-seek in the ferns, and a lamb in the roses.

The Calloways live right at the edge of the woods, and the kids had been planning our walk for weeks. We spent the first half of the session inside, though, where Hazel stood very still in her white dress and her little brother kept popping up behind her shoulder.

Once everyone had their shoes on, we headed down the path behind the house. Sarah walked ahead with the two youngest girls, one holding her hand and one insisting she didn’t need to, and I hung back a few steps so they could just be together in the light coming through the trees.

Halfway down, the ferns get taller than the smallest Calloway, which makes for excellent hide-and-seek. Ivy found the best hiding spot of the day and then gave it away by turning around to check if I was coming.

At the bottom of the hill is the neighbors’ rose garden, and in the rose garden lives a lamb. I had been promised the lamb. I did not quite believe in the lamb. But there it was, and Lou held it close until they both closed their eyes.

By then the air had turned cool, so a big red scarf came out of Sarah’s bag and everyone squeezed into it with their mom for one last picture, cheeks pink and hair everywhere.

Thank you, Calloways, for the tour of your woods. Please give my regards to the lamb.
