A studio of one, in Bergen.

Halvor

Halvor Lunde began in the kitchens of Bergen, photographing cooks at the pass in the hour before the doors opened, and the rooms came after: the hotels the cooks worked in, the restaurants they went on to open, the houses they went home to.

The work is slow on purpose. A room is photographed in the light it already has, at the hour it is best, and the people who keep it are in the pictures because they are in the room. Nothing is brought in and nothing is moved that would not be moved by the end of the day.

A shoot is a day, sometimes two; a hotel is usually three. The pictures come back within a month, and Halvor answers every email himself.

Photographs in Nordic Rooms, The Fjord Table, Hotel Ledger and Bergen Bord.

The process
01

Write and say where the rooms are, and I’ll tell you honestly whether I’m the right fit for them.

02

We walk the rooms through on a call, and agree the hours with the best light in them.

03

I photograph from the inside: the shape of the room first, then closer for what gives it scale.

04

A first look within the week, the finished set inside a month, and prints after.

Questions

How far ahead should we book?

Most hotels plan the photography a season or more ahead. If your rooms are sooner, write anyway — something often opens.

Do you travel?

Yes. Bergen is home, and a handful of rooms further away each year. Travel within Norway is included in every commission.

Can we add rooms or a second visit?

Rooms are added by the room, and a second visit joins from The house up. Both are settled before the days, never on them.

What if the weather turns?

Then the rooms close in and the lamps come on. Some of the best frames are made against the glass in the rain.

Kind words

He was in the kitchen for two days and the cooks stopped seeing him by the first lunch.

Sigrid

We asked for the rooms and got the house: the dog on the stairs, the light on the landing at seven.

Anders

For a hotel, a restaurant or a house, write and say where it is.
